Data Flow Architecture
Happy reading. To understand what is actually going on, let us first get to understand what the process whose piping and instrumentation diagrams is depicted above is all about. The heat exchanger is a process unit in which steam is used to heat up a liquid material.
The material, called feedstock, is pumped at a specific flow rate with pump P into the pipes passing through the heat exchanger chamber called the tube where heat is transferred from steam to the material in the pipe.
It is usually desired to regulate the temperature of the outlet flow irrespective of the change in the demand flow rate of the feed stock or change in the inlet temperature of the feed stock. The regulation of the outlet temperature is achieved by automatic control of the steam flow rate to the heat exchanger E The pneumatic signals are represented by solid lines with double strip across.
Flow Indicator and Controller. This control room mounted instrument controls the flow of cold feedstock entering the tube side of the heat exchanger by accurately positioning a control valve FCV on the cold feedstock flow path.
A Flow transmitter, FTin conjunction with a flow sensor orifice plate measures the flow of cold feedstock and sends a corresponding electrical signal to controller, FICin the control room. Similarly, FT measures the flow of steam into the exchanger using a flow sensor orifice plate and sends a corresponding electrical signal to Flow Recorder, FR to indicate the measured flow.
Flow Recorder. This control room mounted instrument records the steam flow rate. It measures the steam flow rate in conjunction with a flow transmitter, FT and a flow sensor orifice plate. This hand switch is mounted in the control room. When the switch is in the ON condition, the pump is running.HOW TO READ P\u0026ID - PIPING AND INSTRUMENTATION DIAGRAM - PROCESS ENGINEERING - PIPING MANTRA -
When the switch is in the OFF condition, the pump is not running. This alarm fires should the steam header pressure be less than the pressure required for the heat exchanger to work accurately.
Note that the alarm module is mounted in the control room. Pressure Indicator, This control room mounted instrument displays the steam pressure at the shell side of the heat exchanger. This pressure measurement is done using pressure transmitter, PT Pressure Indicator, This instrument displays the steam header pressure. Pressure measurement is also done using pressure transmitter, PT This alarm fires should the temperature of the feed stock at the exchanger outlet goes beyond or falls below stipulated temperatures for high or low temperature of the feed stock coming out of the exchanger.
This control room mounted instrument displays the temperature of the steam entering the shell side of the heat exchanger. This is a field mounted instrument that measures the temperature of the outlet feed stock from the heat exchanger.
This control room mounted instrument controls the temperature of the feed stock at the exchanger outlet by accurately positioning the valve TCV that regulates the steam flow to the exchanger. TT measures the temperature of the feedstock at the exchanger outlet. This measured temperature is sent in the form of electrical signals to TIRC This control room mounted instrument displays the temperature of the feed stock entering the exchanger. These symbols can represent actuators, sensors, and controllers and may be apparent in most, if not all, system diagrams.
The standard notation, varying from letters to figures, is important for engineers to understand because it a common language used for discussing plants in the industrial world.
This section covers four main types of nomenclature. The first section describes the use of lines to describe process connectivity. The second section describes letters used to identify control devices in a process. The third section describes actuators, which are devices that directly control the process.
Line symbols are used to describe connectivity between different units in a controlled system. The table describes the most common lines. The last column in the Table shows pipes that are controlled by a controller. In addition to line symbols, there are also line labels that are short codes that convey further properties of that line.
These short codes consist of: diameter of pipe, service, material, and insulation. The diameter of the pipe is presented in inches. The service is what is being carried in the pipe, and is usually the major component in the stream. The material tells you what the that section of pipe is made out of. Examples are CS for carbon steel or SS for stainless steel.
This is useful for providing you more practical information on a given pipe segment. The following letters are used to describe the control devices involved in a process.
Each device is labeled with two letters. The first letter describes the parameter the device is intended to control. The second letter describes the type of control device. The following symbols are used to represent valves and valve actuators in a chemical engineering process.
Actuators are the mechanisms that activate process control equipment. The ISA S5. At the end will also be reported the literal and graphic symbols of the power supplies and signals of the instrumentation.
The table shows the symbology of control signals for instrumentation. Author: Dott.

The Block Flow Diagram has the purpose of illustrating the logical flow of the processing phases of the product, highlighting the processing sequence, their concatenations and the types of treatment plant: each block represents a treatment unit of the process plant.
The Process Flow Diagram examines the single unit or the plant itself, and it represents the main equipment, the connections between them pipeshighlights the main tools equipment, instruments, and valvesand the essential settings for a correct operation and a correct management of the plant itself, as the following nominal operate conditions:. Figure 1 Example of a measured and controlled Wessel with discrete electronic instrumentation:.
A process flow diagram PFD shows, generally, only the major equipment used in a chemical process and the logic flow of the chemicals treated within the plant.
PFDs are developed in the initial stages of plant engineering, or for training, maintenance and operation purposes, to outline the basic characteristics of the processes that have to be managed by the plant. A PFD generally does not show the relieving system, pumps minimum flows, compressor anti-surge flows, and the isolation system. Author: Dott. Your email address will not be published.
